Forgiveness is one of the hardest commands in the Bible. When we’ve been deeply hurt, betrayed, rejected, or treated unfairly, holding on to anger can seem easier than letting go. Yet Jesus calls His followers to a different way—a way marked by mercy, grace, and reconciliation.
Jesus says:
“For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.” — Matthew 6:14 (NIV)
These words come immediately after Jesus teaches the Lord’s Prayer, reminding us that those who have received God’s mercy are called to extend mercy to others.
Forgiveness does not mean pretending the wrong never happened. It does not excuse sin, ignore justice, or require immediate restoration of every broken relationship. Instead, biblical forgiveness means choosing to release personal revenge into God’s hands and refusing to let bitterness control our hearts. Reconciliation may be possible in some situations, while in others healthy boundaries are still necessary. But believers are always called to cultivate hearts willing to forgive.
Why? Because every Christian has experienced the greatest act of forgiveness through Jesus Christ. At the cross, Jesus willingly bore our sins so that we could be reconciled to God. Having received such incredible grace, we are called to reflect that same grace toward others.
Forgiveness doesn’t only bless the person who is forgiven—it also brings freedom to the one who forgives. It breaks the chains of resentment, heals wounded hearts, restores peace, and allows God’s love to transform relationships.
Choosing forgiveness may take time, prayer, and God’s strength, but it opens the door for healing that bitterness can never provide.
Every act of forgiveness points people back to the mercy of Christ.

Heavenly Father, thank You for forgiving us through Jesus Christ. Give us the strength to forgive those who have hurt us, remove bitterness from our hearts, and replace it with Your love, mercy, and peace. Help us become people who reflect Your grace in our words, actions, and relationships. May Your forgiveness transform us so that we can become instruments of reconciliation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
