Throughout His ministry, Jesus answered many difficult questions. But when a religious teacher asked Him which commandment was the greatest, Jesus gave an answer that has guided believers for over two thousand years.
Jesus says:
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” — Matthew 22:37–38 (NIV)
This is more than a command—it is an invitation to a wholehearted relationship with God.
To love God with all your heart means placing Him above every earthly desire and allowing Him to shape our deepest affections.
To love Him with all your soul means worshiping Him with our entire lives, trusting Him in every circumstance, and remaining faithful whether life is easy or difficult.
To love Him with all your mind means seeking His wisdom, filling our thoughts with His truth, and allowing His Word to guide every decision we make.
Jesus teaches that loving God is not merely about attending church or performing religious rituals. It is demonstrated through obedience, worship, prayer, compassion, and a daily desire to know Him more deeply. When God becomes the center of our lives, our priorities begin to change, our relationships become healthier, and our hearts experience a peace that the world cannot provide.
Immediately after this command, Jesus adds another: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Genuine love for God naturally overflows into love for others. A transformed heart produces transformed actions.
In a world filled with distractions, fear, and endless pursuits, Jesus reminds us of what matters most. Careers, possessions, and achievements may fade, but a life devoted to God has eternal significance.
The greatest commandment is also the greatest invitation—to know the One who first loved us and to respond with our whole heart.

Heavenly Father, teach us to love You with all our heart, soul, and mind. Remove anything that competes for first place in our lives. Fill us with a deeper desire to know You, obey Your Word, and reflect Your love to everyone around us. May our thoughts, choices, and actions bring glory to Your name each day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
