π° INTRODUCTION β MARRIAGE NEEDS MORE THAN FEELINGS
Marriage is one of the most serious relationships God established for mankind. Yet a strong marriage cannot survive on romance, attraction, money, compatibility, or emotion alone. Feelings may fluctuate, circumstances may change, bodies grow older, financial pressures come, and disagreements ariseβbut biblical loyalty remains committed.
From a Dispensational perspective, we should rightly divide passages concerning marriage. All Scripture is profitable (2 Timothy 3:16), but our direct doctrinal instructions as members of the Body of Christ are found especially in Paul's epistles. Therefore, while Genesis establishes marriage and other Scriptures provide valuable wisdom, Ephesians, Colossians, Romans, and 1 Corinthians give us direct Pauline instruction for Christian marriage under Grace.
Marriage does not save anyone. A husband and wife must first understand that salvation is by grace through faith in Christ's finished work.
π 1 Corinthians 15:1β4 β Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again.
π Ephesians 2:8β9 β Salvation is by grace through faith, not works.
Then, as two believers learn who they are in Christ, grace should transform how they treat one another.
Here are six alliterated principles of marital loyalty.
1οΈβ£ LOVE COMPLETELY
π Ephesians 5:25
βHusbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.β
Biblical love is more than emotion. It is a deliberate willingness to seek the good of your spouse.
A. LOVE SACRIFICIALLY
π Ephesians 5:25
Christ's love for the Church provides the husband with the supreme pattern of self-giving love.
A husband should not continually ask:
βWhat can my wife do for me?β
He should also ask:
βHow can I serve, protect, encourage, and care for my wife?β
Christlike leadership is not dictatorship. It is sacrificial responsibility.
B. LOVE SELFLESSLY
π Philippians 2:3β4
ββ¦in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.β
Selfishness says:
βME FIRST.β
Grace says:
βHow can I seek your good?β
Many marital conflicts become worse because both spouses insist on winning. Sometimes preserving the relationship is more important than winning the argument.
C. LOVE STEADFASTLY
π 1 Corinthians 13:4β7
Love suffers long. Love is kind. Love does not behave itself unseemly.
Biblical love remains committed when marriage becomes difficult.
Real love is demonstrated not merely when everything is easy, but when faithfulness costs something.
π MARRIAGE TRUTH:
LOVE IS MORE THAN SOMETHING YOU FEELβIT IS SOMETHING YOU PRACTICE.
2οΈβ£ HONOR CONTINUALLY
π Romans 12:10
βBe kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another.β
A spouse should never become the person we respect least simply because he or she is the person we know best.
A. HONOR WITH YOUR WORDS
π Ephesians 4:29
βLet no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouthβ¦β
Words can strengthen a marriage or slowly destroy it.
Avoid humiliation, insults, contempt, cruel sarcasm, and constantly reminding your spouse of past failures.
Speak words that build rather than break.
B. HONOR WITH YOUR WAYS
π Philippians 2:3
Treat your spouse with dignity privately as well as publicly.
It is inconsistent to appear loving at church while treating your spouse harshly at home.
Your spouse should experience your Christianityβnot merely hear you talk about it.
C. HONOR WITH YOUR WALK
π Ephesians 4:1β2
Walk:
with lowliness,
with meekness,
with longsuffering,
forbearing one another in love.
Grace should be visible inside the home.
π MARRIAGE TRUTH:
DON'T GIVE STRANGERS YOUR BEST ATTITUDE AND YOUR SPOUSE YOUR WORST.
3οΈβ£ GROW CONTINUALLY
π Colossians 2:6β7
A healthy marriage requires two people who continue growing spiritually.
The objective is not merely:
βHow can we stay married?β
But also:
βHow can our marriage increasingly reflect Christ?β
A. GROW IN GRACE
π Titus 2:11β12
Grace does not merely save us; grace teaches us how to live.
The same grace that forgave you should affect how you treat your spouse.
A grace-centered husband cannot constantly demand perfection from his wife.
A grace-centered wife cannot continually weaponize her husband's failures.
Remember how much grace God has shown you.
B. GROW IN GOD'S WORD
π 2 Timothy 2:15
βStudy to shew thyself approved unto Godβ¦β
Couples need sound doctrine.
When Scripture rightly divided shapes the mind, it changes:
priorities, attitudes, decisions, communication, and relationships.
Don't build your marriage primarily on social-media advice.
Build it upon biblical truth.
C. GROW IN GRATITUDE
π 1 Thessalonians 5:18
βIn every thing give thanksβ¦β
One danger in marriage is becoming accustomed to your spouse's goodness.
You notice what is wrong but stop appreciating what is right.
Gratitude protects marriage from taking one another for granted.
π MARRIAGE TRUTH:
A MARRIAGE GROWS STRONGER WHEN BOTH SPOUSES KEEP GROWING IN GRACE.
4οΈβ£ GUARD FAITHFULLY
π 1 Corinthians 7:2
ββ¦let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.β
Marriage requires exclusivity and faithfulness.
Loyalty is not merely avoiding physical adultery. It includes guarding the marriage from relationships and behaviors that threaten trust.
A. GUARD YOUR BODY
π 1 Corinthians 6:18
βFlee fornication.β
Sexual purity matters.
Marriage does not give us permission to flirt with temptation.
Do not ask:
βHow close can I get to sin without falling?β
Ask:
βHow far can I stay from something that could damage my marriage?β
B. GUARD YOUR BOUNDARIES
π 1 Corinthians 10:12
βWherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.β
Wisdom establishes boundaries before temptation arrives.
Be careful with secret conversations, emotional attachments, flirtation, inappropriate online relationships, and circumstances you would hide from your spouse.
Secrecy is fertile ground for betrayal.
C. GUARD YOUR BOND
π 1 Corinthians 7:3β5
Paul teaches husbands and wives to recognize their mutual marital responsibilities.
Physical and emotional intimacy should not become weapons for manipulation.
Protect closeness.
Protect communication.
Protect trust.
π MARRIAGE TRUTH:
LOYALTY IS NOT JUST SAYING βI WON'T LEAVEββIT IS LIVING SO YOUR SPOUSE CAN TRUST YOU.
5οΈβ£ GIVE FORGIVENESS
π Colossians 3:13
ββ¦forgiving one anotherβ¦ even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.β
Two imperfect people living closely together will eventually hurt, disappoint, or misunderstand one another.
Therefore, a lasting marriage needs forgiveness.
A. FORGIVE GRACIOUSLY
π Ephesians 4:32
ββ¦forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.β
Our pattern is God's grace toward us.
We did not deserve God's forgiveness.
Yet forgiveness was provided through Christ.
B. FORSAKE BITTERNESS
π Ephesians 4:31
βLet all bitterness, and wrath, and angerβ¦ be put away from youβ¦β
Unresolved bitterness poisons present happiness with yesterday's pain.
Forgiveness does not mean pretending serious wrongdoing never happened, nor does it automatically remove necessary boundaries or consequences.
But it refuses to cultivate vengeance.
C. FAVOR RECONCILIATION
π Romans 12:18
βIf it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.β
If that principle applies broadly, surely Christians should earnestly pursue peace within marriage.
Sometimes you need to say:
βI was wrong.β
βPlease forgive me.β
βLet's fix this together.β
Those are not words of weakness.
They are words of humility.
π MARRIAGE TRUTH:
DON'T KEEP A RECORD OF EVERY FAILURE WHEN GRACE CALLS YOU TO PRACTICE FORGIVENESS.
6οΈβ£ GROUND YOUR HOME IN CHRIST
π Colossians 3:17β19
The deepest foundation of a Christian marriage is not merely mutual attraction.
It is a shared life shaped by Christ and sound doctrine.
A. GROUND IT IN THE GOSPEL
π 1 Corinthians 15:1β4
Before becoming a godly husband or wife, understand your greatest need:
salvation.
Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again.
Marriage cannot save your soul.
Church membership cannot save your soul.
Good works cannot save your soul.
π Romans 4:5
Trust Christ's finished work.
B. GROUND IT IN GRACE
π Ephesians 4:32
A grace-centered home does not mean sin is ignored.
It means truth is practiced with patience, kindness, forgiveness, and humility.
Think about this:
If God dealt with you according to every failure, where would you be?
Therefore, show grace to your spouse.
C. GROUND IT IN GOD'S WORD RIGHTLY DIVIDED
π 2 Timothy 2:15
A Strict Mid-Acts home recognizes Paul's distinctive apostleship.
π Romans 11:13
We learn our identity and walk as members of the Body of Christ particularly through Paul's epistles.
Let sound doctrine govern your:
marriage, money, parenting, ministry, priorities, communication, and conduct.
π MARRIAGE TRUTH:
THE STRONGEST CHRISTIAN HOME IS NOT A PERFECT HOMEβIT IS A HOME GOVERNED BY GRACE AND TRUTH.
π CONCLUSION β LOYALTY IS LOVE THAT REFUSES TO LIVE SELFISHLY
Marriage will face changing seasons.
Beauty changes.
Money changes.
Circumstances change.
Feelings fluctuate.
Health changes.
But Christian loyalty says:
βI will love faithfully.β
βI will honor consistently.β
βI will grow spiritually.β
βI will guard our marriage.β
βI will forgive graciously.β
βI will build our home around Christ.β
Paul's instructions beautifully summarize the spirit necessary for marriage:
π Colossians 3:12β14
Put on:
mercy, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering, forbearance, forgivenessβand above all, charity.
A grace-centered marriage should become a living demonstration of what happens when two imperfect people allow biblical truth to govern their relationship.
π£ CALL TO ACTION β THREE C's
1. COMMIT TO YOUR COVENANT
π 1 Corinthians 7:10β11
Treat marriage seriously.
Stop nurturing escape fantasies whenever difficulties arise. Seek biblical resolution, wise counsel, and reconciliation where safely and genuinely possible.
Commitment says: βWe will work through problems rather than pretending they don't exist.β
2. COMMUNICATE WITH CHARITY
π Ephesians 4:15
βBut speaking the truth in loveβ¦β
Truth without love becomes harsh.
Love without truth becomes shallow.
Marriage needs both.
Speak truthβbut speak it lovingly.
3. CENTER YOUR LIFE IN CHRIST
π Colossians 3:1β4
Don't make your spouse your savior.
Your husband cannot satisfy every need of your soul.
Your wife cannot satisfy every need of your soul.
Your identity, acceptance, righteousness, and eternal security are ultimately in Christ.
When Christ occupies His proper place, spouses are freed to love one another without demanding that the other person become what only Christ can be.
π‘ FINAL THOUGHTS β REMEMBER THE SIX PRINCIPLES
1οΈβ£ LOVE COMPLETELY β Love sacrificially, selflessly, and steadfastly.
π Ephesians 5:25
2οΈβ£ HONOR CONTINUALLY β Respect your spouse in words, ways, and walk.
π Romans 12:10
3οΈβ£ GROW CONTINUALLY β Grow together in grace, God's Word, and gratitude.
π Colossians 2:6β7
4οΈβ£ GUARD FAITHFULLY β Protect your body, boundaries, and marital bond.
π 1 Corinthians 7:2β5
5οΈβ£ GIVE FORGIVENESS β Replace bitterness with grace and reconciliation.
π Colossians 3:13
6οΈβ£ GROUND YOUR HOME IN CHRIST β Build your marriage upon the Gospel, Grace, and God's Word rightly divided.
π 1 Corinthians 15:1β4; 2 Timothy 2:15
π A STRONG MARRIAGE IS NOT TWO PERFECT PEOPLE.
IT IS TWO IMPERFECT PEOPLE LEARNING TO PRACTICE GRACE, TRUTH, FORGIVENESS, AND FAITHFULNESS.
LOVE EACH OTHER.
HONOR EACH OTHER.
GUARD EACH OTHER.
FORGIVE EACH OTHER.
GROW TOGETHER.
STAY FAITHFUL.
