π° INTRODUCTION β ONE GOD, THREE PERSONS
The word βTrinityβ does not appear in the Bible, but the truth represented by that term is revealed throughout Scripture.
The Bible teaches:
There is ONE God.
π 1 Corinthians 8:4
The Father is God.
π Ephesians 4:6
The Son is God.
π Colossians 2:9
The Holy Spirit is God.
π Acts 5:3β4
Yet the Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit is not the Father.
Paul beautifully brings the three together:
π 2 Corinthians 13:14 KJV
βThe grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all.β
From a Dispensational perspective, this doctrine is especially precious because our salvation and position in the Body of Christ involve the work of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
The Father planned.
The Son purchased.
The Spirit placed and sealed.
Let us examine six truths.
1οΈβ£ THE PERSONS OF THE GODHEAD
π 2 Corinthians 13:14; Ephesians 4:4β6; Matthew 28:19
The Bible presents the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit distinctly without teaching three Gods.
A. THE FATHER IS PERSONAL
π Ephesians 4:6
βOne God and Father of allβ¦β
The Father is not merely a title or manifestation. Scripture distinguishes Him personally from the Son.
π Galatians 4:4.
B. THE SON IS PERSONAL
π Romans 1:3β4
Jesus Christ is the eternal Son who truly entered humanity.
He is not the Father pretending to be the Son.
Paul distinguishes:
βGod our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christβ¦β
π Romans 1:7.
C. THE SPIRIT IS PERSONAL
π Ephesians 4:30
βAnd grieve not the holy Spirit of Godβ¦β
The Holy Spirit is not merely an impersonal βforce.β
He teaches, reveals, leads, seals, and can be grieved.
π 1 Corinthians 2:10β13.
π₯ PREACHING TRUTH:
THREE DISTINCT PERSONSβYET ONE TRUE GOD.
2οΈβ£ THE PERFECTION OF THE GODHEAD
π Colossians 2:9; Romans 9:5; 1 Corinthians 3:16
We must not think that the Father is one-third God, the Son one-third God, and the Spirit one-third God.
The divine nature is not divided into thirds.
A. THE FATHER POSSESSES DEITY
π 1 Corinthians 8:6
βBut to us there is but one God, the Fatherβ¦β
The Father possesses the fullness of divine nature.
B. THE SON POSSESSES DEITY
π Colossians 2:9
βFor in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.β
Jesus Christ is not merely a prophet, teacher, angel, or created being.
He is fully God.
π Romans 9:5.
C. THE SPIRIT POSSESSES DEITY
π 1 Corinthians 3:16
β...the Spirit of God dwelleth in you.β
Compare Acts 5:3β4, where lying to the Holy Ghost is described as lying unto God.
π₯ PREACHING TRUTH:
**THE FATHER IS GOD.
THE SON IS GOD.
THE HOLY SPIRIT IS GOD.
YET THERE IS ONE GOD.**
3οΈβ£ THE PLAN OF THE GODHEAD IN SALVATION
π Ephesians 1:3β14
Ephesians 1 gives one of Scripture's magnificent presentations of the work of the Triune God in our salvation.
A. THE FATHER PURPOSED
π Ephesians 1:3β6
God's eternal purpose did not begin when man developed religion.
Our spiritual blessings originate in God's purpose in Christ.
Paul says:
βAccording as he hath chosen us in himβ¦β
Our blessing and standing are in Christ.
B. THE SON PURCHASED
π Ephesians 1:7
βIn whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sinsβ¦β
The Son accomplished the redemptive work.
Our salvation rests upon Christ's:
death,
burial,
and resurrection.
π 1 Corinthians 15:1β4.
C. THE SPIRIT PRESERVES
π Ephesians 1:13β14
β...after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,β
The believer is not waiting for the Holy Spirit to seal him after performing enough religious works.
Upon believing the Gospel, he is sealed.
π Ephesians 4:30.
π₯ PREACHING TRUTH:
**THE FATHER PLANNED IT.
THE SON PURCHASED IT.
THE SPIRIT SEALED IT.**
4οΈβ£ THE PLACEMENT INTO THE BODY OF CHRIST
π 1 Corinthians 12:13; Romans 6:3β4; Ephesians 4:5
This is especially important in a Dispensational understanding.
God's work today concerns the formation of the one Body, revealed particularly through the Apostle Paul.
A. PLACED BY SPIRIT BAPTISM
π 1 Corinthians 12:13
βFor by one Spirit are we all baptized into one bodyβ¦β
The baptism that identifies believers with the Body of Christ is a divine spiritual operation.
It is not accomplished by water.
B. POSITIONED IN CHRIST
π Romans 6:3
βKnow ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?β
Our identification is with Christ Himself:
His death,
His burial,
His resurrection life.
C. PERFECTED IN ONE BODY
π Ephesians 4:4β5
βThere is one body, and one Spiritβ¦ One Lord, one faith, one baptism,β
The believer's unity is not based upon denominational labels.
Our spiritual unity comes from our position in Christ.
π₯ PREACHING TRUTH:
**ONE SPIRIT.
ONE BODY.
ONE LORD.
ONE FAITH.
ONE BAPTISM.**
5οΈβ£ THE PARTS OF MAN MUST BE CONSECRATED TO GOD
π 1 Thessalonians 5:23; Romans 12:1β2; 1 Corinthians 6:19β20
Paul speaks of:
βyour whole spirit and soul and bodyβ¦β
Again, this should not be used as a one-to-one model of the Trinity. But it does remind us that salvation affects the believer as a whole person.
A. THE SPIRIT β OUR INNER LIFE
π Romans 8:16
βThe Spirit itself beareth witness with our spiritβ¦β
The believer possesses spiritual life in Christ.
π Ephesians 2:5.
We are no longer spiritually identified with Adam aloneβwe possess life in Christ.
B. THE SOUL β OUR INNER SELF
π Romans 12:2
β...be ye transformed by the renewing of your mindβ¦β
Our thinking, desires, attitudes, and decisions must increasingly come under the influence of sound doctrine.
Grace does not merely change our destination.
Grace teaches us how to live.
π Titus 2:11β12.
C. THE BODY β OUR EARTHLY SERVICE
π Romans 12:1
β...present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto Godβ¦β
We do not present our bodies to become saved.
We present them because we are saved.
Grace produces grateful service rather than legalistic service.
π₯ PREACHING TRUTH:
SAVED BY GRACEβTHEN SERVE GOD WITH YOUR WHOLE LIFE.
6οΈβ£ THE PRACTICE OF TRINITARIAN GRACE
π Ephesians 2:18; 3:14β21; 5:18β20
The Trinity must not remain merely a theological diagram.
Truth must affect our daily walk.
A. PRAY THROUGH CHRIST
π Ephesians 2:18
βFor through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.β
Notice the beautiful order:
THROUGH THE SON
BY THE SPIRIT
UNTO THE FATHER.
Christ alone provides our access to God.
π 1 Timothy 2:5.
B. PROGRESS THROUGH THE SPIRIT
π Ephesians 5:18
β...be filled with the Spirit;β
Being filled with the Spirit is not losing control through emotional manifestations.
Compare:
π Ephesians 5:18β19
π Colossians 3:16.
The Spirit-filled life is inseparably connected with God's Word dwelling richly in us.
C. PRAISE THE FATHER THROUGH CHRIST
π Ephesians 5:20
βGiving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;β
Grace produces gratitude.
The mature believer recognizes that everything he possesses spiritually is because of God's grace in Christ.
π₯ PREACHING TRUTH:
**KNOW THE FATHER.
GLORY IN THE SON.
WALK IN THE SPIRIT.**
π CONCLUSION β ONE GOD, ONE SAVIOUR, ONE BODY
The doctrine of the Trinity is not a mathematical contradiction.
We are not teaching:
1 God + 1 God + 1 God = 3 Gods.
Biblical Christianity teaches:
ONE divine Being eternally existing as THREE distinct PersonsβFather, Son, and Holy Spirit.
And in this present Dispensation of Grace we see the Godhead beautifully working in our salvation:
The FATHER purposed our blessing.
π Ephesians 1:3β6
The SON purchased our redemption.
π Ephesians 1:7
The SPIRIT sealed our salvation.
π Ephesians 1:13β14
And all three appear beautifully in Paul's benediction:
π 2 Corinthians 13:14
βThe grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghostβ¦β
π£ CALL TO ACTION
1οΈβ£ BELIEVE THE GOSPEL
π 1 Corinthians 15:1β4
Do not merely believe facts about the Trinity while remaining unsaved.
Trust the Gospel:
CHRIST DIED FOR OUR SINS.
HE WAS BURIED.
HE ROSE AGAIN.
Salvation is by grace through faith, apart from works.
π Ephesians 2:8β9.
2οΈβ£ BUILD YOUR LIFE UPON SOUND DOCTRINE
π 2 Timothy 2:15
βStudy to shew thyself approved unto Godβ¦β
Reject both Oneness/modalism, which collapses the Persons into one Person, and tritheism, which turns the three Persons into three Gods.
Believe everything Scripture reveals without forcing God's nature into inadequate human analogies.
3οΈβ£ BRING YOUR WHOLE LIFE TO GOD
π Romans 12:1β2
Let your:
mind be renewed,
body be presented,
life be transformed,
and service be motivated by grace.
Not to earn salvation, but because you already possess salvation in Christ.
π‘ FINAL THOUGHTS
1οΈβ£ ONE GOD β PERFECT IN DEITY
π 1 Corinthians 8:4
2οΈβ£ THREE PERSONS β PERSONAL IN DISTINCTION
π 2 Corinthians 13:14
3οΈβ£ THE FATHER β PURPOSED OUR BLESSING
π Ephesians 1:3β6
4οΈβ£ THE SON β PURCHASED OUR REDEMPTION
π Ephesians 1:7
5οΈβ£ THE SPIRIT β PRESERVES US BY HIS SEAL
π Ephesians 1:13β14; 4:30
6οΈβ£ THE BELIEVER β PRESENTS HIS WHOLE LIFE FOR SERVICE
π Romans 12:1β2; 1 Thessalonians 5:23
βοΈ THE FATHER PLANNED.
βοΈ THE SON PAID.
βοΈ THE SPIRIT PLACED AND SEALED.
ONE GOD. THREE PERSONS. ONE PERFECT PLAN OF GRACE.
